The present paper discusses toponymic premises which prompt some, primarily Russian historians and enthusiasts, to recognize vestiges of a river name Τουροῦντоς (Lat. Turuntus), the Ptolemaic denomination an eastern tributary Baltic Sea, sometimes identified with Western Dvina, in contemporary toponymy middle drainage basin latter river. Among these, incontestable onomastic facts are oikonyms hydronyms Tarantovo, Byelorussian Tarantova (including variants Turunt- Turant-?), Tarantovka, occurring at or past (their attestations known us date from mid-16th century) least six mutually distant areas neighboring Vitebsk (Byelorussia) Pskov (Russia) Regions localization identification have now been successfully pinned down). On basis modern toponomastics, is increasingly unwilling disregard vocalic correspondences, naming structure, etymological environment, structure productivity geographical context, identity consonantal skeleton alone largely insufficient postulate genetic link between these East Slavic place names antique form.
